Abstract

This article explores the relevance and integration of historical and cultural approaches in contemporary Islamic studies, emphasizing their role in interpreting religious texts and practices in various sociocultural contexts. Using a mixed-methods design, the research involves both quantitative surveys conducted among 120 Islamic studies scholars in Indonesia and qualitative content analysis of key Islamic texts and field interviews. The results indicate a growing appreciation for interdisciplinary perspectives, especially those that consider local historical narratives and cultural traditions. Findings demonstrate that understanding Islam through historical and cultural lenses can enhance contextualized religious interpretation and bridge gaps between classical teachings and modern societal dynamics. This study contributes to developing inclusive Islamic scholarship that respects tradition while engaging critically with present realities.
