KONSEP NORMATIVITAS DAN HISTORITAS ISLAM SEBAGAI SASARAN STUDI SECARA MENDALAM

Abstract

This study critically explores the concepts of normativity and historicity in Islam as two major epistemological approaches within contemporary Islamic studies. Normativity refers to the fixed, universal, and transcendent teachings of Islam, whereas historicity emphasizes the contextual, temporal, and socio-cultural dimensions in which these teachings emerged. In academic discourse, these two approaches are often viewed in dichotomous terms, resulting in polarization between textualist and contextualist understandings. Using a qualitative method through literature review, this research analyzes the contributions of modern Muslim thinkers such as Fazlur Rahman and Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, who advocate for an integrative approach between normativity and historicity. The findings suggest that a dialectical approach combining both aspects enables a more relevant and dynamic interpretation of Islam, especially in addressing contemporary challenges, without compromising the core values of the faith. Therefore, this study recommends reinforcing an integrative paradigm in Islamic studies to maintain the continuity of tradition while constructively engaging with social transformation.
